How to count words in a draft

A form limit, a caption, or a brief usually cares about words or characters. Paste the draft and read both numbers before you trim.

Match the number the limit uses

Some forms count words. Others count characters, with or without spaces. The counter lists words, characters, characters without spaces, lines, and sentences so you can use the one the limit asks for.

A blank line still counts as a line. Sentences are split on periods, question marks, and exclamation marks.

Count the text you will submit

Paste the draft after you have finished editing it. A heading, a signature, or a leftover note will change the total if it is still in the box.

The draft is not uploaded

The count runs in the browser. Clear the field when you are finished if the draft is private.
