How to check meta title and description length

Search results usually show about 60 characters of a title and 160 of a description. Count them before you publish so the snippet is less likely to cut off mid-phrase.

Count the title tag first

Paste the page title you plan to use in the title tag. About 60 characters is a practical guide for what search results often show. Longer titles can still rank, but the visible snippet may end with an ellipsis.

Put the primary phrase near the start. If the important words sit after character 60, people may never see them in the results list.

Then check the meta description

Paste the meta description and aim near 160 characters. Write one clear sentence about what the page does, not a keyword list. Google may rewrite the description, but a tight draft still helps when it is used.

Open the meta title and description length checker, paste both fields, and shorten anything marked over the usual limit before you ship the page.

Characters are a guide, not a pixel ruler

Wide letters take more space than narrow ones, and mobile results differ from desktop. Treat 60 and 160 as planning limits, then check how the live snippet looks after indexing.

The checker counts in your browser. The text is not uploaded.
